Christmas Lights

I have always been fascinated by lights, especially Christmas lights. I could sit in a chair for hours transfixed as each colored light twinkled right before my eyes, mesmerized to the point of oblivion.

Growing up, we did not have a Christmas tree or ornaments, and obviously, no Christmas lights at home. So I promised myself that when I could afford it, I would put up a tree with ornaments and lights every Christmas season to satisfy my craving. It became so silly that I would choose lights to food!

Don’t get me wrong! Without the tree, ornaments and lights, our parents showered us with unconditional love. That’s how we enjoyed the Yuletide season.

Jesus as the “Light of the World,” uses the imagery of twinkling lights to represent the hope, joy and guidance he brings into our lives, even in the darkest times, reminding us to also shine that light outward to others.

Christmas lights are not just decorations. They are Christian declarations of Jesus in John 8:12 - “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light that leads to life.”

Our relationships with God turn on the light of hope in our souls. Then we can shine our light into this world, as well. Christmas lights remind us to stay plugged into a connection with God, our ultimate power source.

Lights are not just decorative, they are symbolic. They are symbolic of love put into action. And they should be lit even past the Yuletide season.

Think about a string of bulbs wrapped around a tree. It looks barren, bored, uninteresting, unattractive. But once they are turned on and start to twinkle, you get to enjoy the beauty of the lights. So it is within us. Humanity will only appreciate us when our lights are turned on through our selfless service.

That’s what FISSH stands for. Bringing enduring hope, comfort and joy to humanity!

By our individual selves, our light may just be a sliver of hope in the darkness. Each with different shades and hue of talent and expertise. But put together we become a beacon of hope, comfort and joy to humanity. As the humber of FISSH members grow, so does the power of light.

Keep your light shining my fellow FISSHes!
